As a standout on the track and field team Davis won the PSAC title in the 100-yard dash in 1971 and 1972. In the 220-yard event, Davis was second in 1971 and took first in 1972. At the 1972 PSAC championships Davis won the award for most points scored at the championships (18). During his four years at Bloomsburg he helped the Huskies post a dual meet record of 44-3 as well as finishing third at the PSAC championships in 1971 and second in 1972. Davis was a three-year captain for the Huskies and earned the Underclassmen of the Year honor in 1970 and the Robert B. Redman Award as the Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1972. He also selected to the Outstanding College Athletes of America and Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges. At the time of his graduation David held three individual and three relay records.

Following graduation, Davis coached girl's track at Cedar Cliff High School from 1975 to 1996. His team won two conference titles along with having coached numerous district and state place winners.
