Lichtel was a key member of Bloomsburg's football team from 1965-67. He established 24 single-game, season and career records. As a quarterback, he threw for 4,953 yards and 43 touchdowns, while completing 332 of 651 passes. Lichtel averaged 215.3 yards per game and set several marks with 32 completions and five touchdowns in single-game performances. He went on to play semiprofessional football for three seasons. Lichtel later became head coach at Mechanicsburg High School, winning the PIAA District Three "AAAA" title in 1986 with a 10-3 record.
