Matt Karchner

Karchner, a power-hitting third baseman who also pitched for Bloomsburg, went on to play in the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox over the course of a 12-year career. A three-time All-PSAC selection, Karchner finished his career at Bloomsburg with a .372 batting average with school records for home runs with 37 and runs batted in with 165. At the time of his graduation, his 37 home runs were a PSAC record. In 1988 as a junior, Karchner led all of Division II in RBI per game with 62 in 39 games (1.59 per game). As a senior in 1989, Karchner set the school single season mark with 14 homers, while also hitting .435. As a pitcher, Karchner finished his career with a record of 13-7 with four saves and a 2.40 ERA. He also struck out 111 and walked just 61. He holds the school record for fewest walks in a season with seven in 1988.

Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1989, Karchner posted a career record of 21-13 with 27 saves. He is one of a handful of major league players to play for both Chicago teams during his career.
