Byham was a seven-time letter winner at Bloomsburg, playing three years of both basketball and baseball and one year of football. On the hardwoods, Byham finished second on the team in scoring in the 1951-52 season. For his efforts, he was named to an All-Pennsylvania Collegiate Basketball Team Honorable Mention selection. On the baseball diamond, Byham was equally as good. In 1951, he threw back-to-back complete games in a four-day span, striking out 13 batters each time. After Bloomsburg, Byham spent 30 years in radio and was the voice of the Little League World Series for over 31 years, winning the W. Harold Hartman Friendship Award for his commitment to Little League baseball.
